TRAVEL

The University of Strathclyde is located in Glasgow city-centre and west end, so is easily accessible by all means of transport. The only exception is Ross Priory, the university's 'Conference & Recreational Centre', which is situated on the southern bank of Loch Lomond, to the north of Glasgow.

What is there to do, in and around Glasgow...?

Situated in the very heart of Glasgow, the University is ideally located for visitor attractions, restaurants, shops, theatres and cinemas.

Glasgow is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city, famed for its culture, its architecture, its nightlife and its green spaces. It offers a wealth of activities to visitors, from galleries and museums, to superb shops and a vast range of restaurants and cafes.

Visitor Attractions - many of which are free of charge!

Glasgow's many galleries and museums are popular with visitors, from the award-winning Burrell Collection with over 8,000 art objects and Pollok House, one of Scotland's finest Georgian country houses, both set in Pollok Park in Glasgow city-centre; the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, the most popular free visitor attraction in Scotland; to the Gallery of Modern Art offering paintings, sculptures and installations from around the world.

Other places of interest include Scotland's flagship millennium attraction, the Glasgow Science Centre featuring interactive exhibits & planetarium; the Museum of Transport; the People's Palace, which tells the story of Glasgow, the city's past & its people; and The Tall Ship Glenlee, at Glasgow Harbour, with its interactive exhibitions and events programme.

From modern shopping complexes and designer boutiques to open-air markets and souvenir shops.

Centrally located shopping centres such as the Buchanan Galleries, Princes Square & St. Enoch Shopping Centre, or if you prefer a bargain, why not try the The Barras (just east of Glasgow Cross) Glasgow's famous outdoor & indoor market, open each Saturday & Sunday.

If jewellery is what you are after, don't miss one of Britain's oldest covered shopping arcades; dating from 1827, The Argyll Arcade (off Buchanan St/Argyle St) is home to 32 jewellery shops.

Architecture - Charles Rennie Mackintosh (back to top)

Glasgow offers a multitude of stunning architecture styles, and in particular there are many fine examples of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the famous Glasgow- born architect and designer. The Lighthouse, Scotland's Centre for Architecture, Design & the City, features a Mackintosh interpretation Centre. Glasgow School of Art is Mackintosh's architectural masterpiece; House For An Art Lover, set in beautiful parkland and inspired by original designs by Mackintosh; and The Willow Tearooms designed by Mackintosh and still functioning as a tearoom.

Travel to Glasgow & within Glasgow couldn't be easier. Glasgow International Airport, (www.baa.co.uk) is only 8 miles from Glasgow city-centre and a frequent bus service will bring you from the airport to Buchanan Bus Station. Scottish Citylink (www.citylink.co.uk) provides fast & frequent coach services throughout Scotland, and Scottish Partnership for Transport (www.spt.co.uk) can offer rail & underground services in and around Glasgow.
